The first defensive Spell that any Mage learns is Magic Shield.
It is the perfect defence against Magic Blast and other, minor physical
spells such as Electric Bolt or even Ignite, and few Mages ever leave their home
without casting at least one Magic Shield.
When
cast, Magic Shield will surround the casting Mage in a field of energy that
shimmers with every colour of the rainbow.
After a few seconds, these colours will fade from sight and there will be
nothing to show that the Mage has been Shielded.
When as spell such as Magic Blast hits the Mage, the Shield will flare
into life again, with the colours flashing brightly for a moment or two.
A Shield will protect against only one such attack as it is destroyed by
the force of the attacking spell.
The
Mage can cast as many Shield spells upon themselves as they wish and each Shield
Spell will last until it is used or until the Mage sleeps.
Magic Shields have no effect against spells that require more than one
Spell Point and the Shield provides no protection from physical attacks of any
kind.
Every colour of the spectrum flashed around Timac as his Magic Shield
flared into life to absorb the attack from his opponent.
“Stupid
move,” called Timac. “You know
as well as I do that direct confrontation between Mages is forbidden.
I could kill you now if that Blast was the best you can do but I feel
generous. Leave now and I will say
nothing of your foolishness.”
Timac’s
foe was unsettled by the failure of his first attack but he was not quite ready
to give up the fight yet.
“Run,
you idiot, I am offering you your life!” screamed Timac at the top of his
voice.
This
was enough for the enemy Mage. Mumbling
an incantation, the Mage vanished, leaving only a small, swirling air current to
show that he had ever been there.
Sighing
with relief, Timac let himself slide to the ground.
He was exhausted, it has been a long day and he had no strength left, not
even enough Magical ability to cast another Shield.
He knew that his first, and only, Shield had saved his life, but he also
knew that it was his bluff that had kept him alive.
Completely
drained of Magic and shaking with relief, Timac forced himself upright and
started the long walk back to the Academy.
Through pure luck he had escaped this time but he vowed he would never
leave the safety of his room with only one Shield ever again.
