Sleep is another of the Spells that are available only to Mages who have
graduated from Matrix’s Academy. The
Caster of this Spell must be able to see the target and the target has to be
within 10 yards of the Mage. As
soon as the Spell is cast, the Mage’s Will Power is compared to that of the
victim and, if the Mage’s is stronger, the target will fall instantly asleep.
This Magical Sleep will last for a full five minutes or until the sleeper
is woken by normal means. Loud
noises, shaking or wounding will all waken the target.
At
higher levels, the Sleep Spell will affect more than one target, will have
greater range and a longer duration. It
should be noted that animals can be as easily affected by this Spell as humans
can but beings that do not naturally sleep are immune to the effects of the
Sleep Spell.
Tina knew that her husband would be sitting up for her and she
knew that she would be facing a long lecture when she got home.
Maybe she had promised to be in by nightfall and maybe she had sworn that
she would never be unfaithful again, but these things happen!
The
Mage approached her home and quietly walked up to the window.
She could see her husband sitting in the chair by the fire and staring
into the flames. His fingers were
drumming on the arm of the chair and Tine knew that he would be thinking of what
he was going to say to his wife when she finally did come home.
“I
don’t need this,” she said to herself.
“Not tonight, not now. I’m
just too tired to listen to the old fool droning on.”
Stepping
back from the window slightly, Tina cracked her knuckles to relax her fingers
and started the complex gestures and Incantations of the Sleep Spell. As she finished, she gestured at her husband and concentrated
on the image of him falling asleep. Almost
instantly, his eyes closed and his hands fell forward onto his lap.
With a
grin of triumph, Tina quietly opened the front door and tiptoed up the stairs to
their bedroom. She knew that there
was now way that she could completely avoid the lecture but at least this way it
was likely to be put off until the morning.
